What to do out and about on a stay with us
A room with a view…and much much more
The location of our beautiful Peak Edge Hotel is a true gem, nestled on the edge of the stunning Peak District. While we recommend you indulge in the pleasures of our hotel (fine dining, great wines, local beers, and soaking in the atmosphere), we understand that some of you may be eager to explore a little more.
Our local area has a wealth of activities for those eager to explore. A good walk and fresh air might make you appreciate our comfortable Hypnos beds even more. Our Operations Manager, Jenna Hardy, shares some of her best ideas for making the most of a break at Peak Edge for those who want to get out and about.
So, let’s start with the great outdoors.
Whether you’re up for a walk, a cycle, or playing golf, the Peak District offers unique experiences that are perfect for getting out and about and breathing in the beauty of nature. “One of our team created a few walks, especially for us, and these are on our website. These steady walks have been tried and tested and are ready to enjoy. They all start as Peak Edge and return there.” Jenna added, “whether it’s a short walk to Stone Edge Chimney and back or a longer but pleasant 3.3-mile circular route from Stanedge Golf Course to Holymoorside via the woods, all three walks we recommend allow you to leave the car in our car park.”
For more challenging walking options where a short drive is needed, you could visit our friends at Visit Peak District & Derbyshire. Still, those seasoned walkers amongst you will already have eyed up the walks before you arrive and have even planned your route (including a beer stop or not)!
For golf, we work with Stanedge Golf Club, our lovely neighbours. The 18-hole course offers a stunning setting with breathtaking views across four counties. The well-maintained moorland/parkland layout provides a beautiful backdrop for golfers of all levels. “We even have a package that includes a round of golf and an overnight stay. So, you can pop back to the Red Lion at Peak Edge after you’ve visited the clubhouse”, says Jenna.
And biking…well, if you’re a real mad cyclist, you will probably bring your bike and have a plan in mind, but Monsal Trail is a must if you’ve not done it before. There are many cycling providers, but we’ve partnered with Peak eBikes, a trusted local business, which has created two special circular routes that take you directly from Peak Edge Hotel and back. These are self-guided mapped tours, and we’ve even got a package to allow you to enjoy bed and breakfast with us, too, that includes their three-hour half-day tour.
More of a history buff?
If your kind of walking is more of a stroll than a hike, why not take some time to meander around some of the amazing historical sites? It’s amazing how many steps you can take when you are busy looking at what’s happening around you.
No “what to do” kind to Derbyshire would neglect Chatsworth Estate. And whether it’s the house, the grounds, the farmyard and adventure playground or one of their amazing events that pulls you in, it’s definitely worth a day out. Oh, and do not forget the food, drink, and shopping.
“Again, you can always enjoy an overnight stay with us, an afternoon sweat treat, and a ticket to Chatsworth for two. It’s a great way to get yourself organised from the very start.”
Seen Chatsworth before? No worries. Why not visit one of the picturesque market towns nearby? For independent shops, cafes and bars, there’s lots to discover.
From Peak Edge Hotel, you can reach Chesterfield with its crooked spire (11 mins), Matlock or Matlock Bath, a tourist destination since the late 17th century (10 -14 mins), Bakewell, best known for its delicious pudding (17 mins) or Buxton with its natural thermal springs (37 mins).
And just for the family...
Of course, you may be visiting with a young family and need something to while away a few hours for the restless tots. Well, for those moments, we would highly recommend Chatsworth Farmyard and Adventure Playground and Matlock Farm Park. Jenna suggests, “A visit to Matlock Farm Park is a must. Fancy a day with the Meerkats, Wallabies or even watching sheep or ferret racing? The toddlers will love it.”
Now, if you are feeling exhausted just reading about all you can do during your stay, why don’t you take a deep breath and remember that there is always the option of doing absolutely nothing. Just sit back, relax, and enjoy the luxury and tranquility…and the view of nature from our restaurant windows.
Jenna Hardy is our Operations Manager, leading the team at Peak Edge Hotel. Jenna has been in her role for over 2 years but cannot keep away. This is her second stint with us, as she started at Casa Hotel many years ago and has 16 years of experience in the hospitality industry. A hands-on leader, if you have ever visited Peak Edge Hotel or the Red Lion Restaurant, you will have seen her around!
